When Faith Spaces Hinder Healing

How Religious Deconstruction Can Be the Beginning of Your Healing Journey

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. For many women living with chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, anxiety, burnout, or emotional exhaustion, the deepest wounds are not always physical. Sometimes the pain comes from being told your diagnosis was caused by a lack of faith, hidden sin, or spiritual failure. This post explores religious deconstruction, spiritual harm, and the journey of reclaiming your body, voice, and spiritual wellness.

What Is Religious Deconstruction?

Religious deconstruction is the process of re-examining beliefs you were taught—especially beliefs that no longer align with your lived experience, your values, or your well-being.

It does not always mean abandoning faith. Sometimes it means untangling truth from fear.

For many people navigating chronic illness, autoimmune disease, burnout, or emotional trauma, deconstruction begins when they realize they have been taught to spiritualize their suffering instead of care for themselves.

Questions may begin to surface:

  • What beliefs were rooted in love versus shame?

  • Why was my illness treated like a spiritual problem?

  • Why did I feel guilty for needing rest, therapy, or medical care?

  • Why was my body treated like something to overcome instead of something to listen to?

These questions are often the beginning of deeper healing.

When Faith-Based Messaging Creates Harm

Faith can be grounding, supportive, and life-giving.

But for many women, especially Black women, religious environments have also created deep emotional pressure around illness and healing.

Comments like:

“You must not be praying hard enough.”

“There must be sin in your life.”

“You need stronger faith.”

“You should read your Bible more.”

These judgments can create shame during moments when compassion is needed most.

Over time, this messaging can lead to:

Internalized Shame

Believing your diagnosis is somehow your fault.

Delayed Care

Feeling guilty for seeking therapy, holistic wellness support, or medical treatment.

Nervous System Burnout

Constant pressure to perform spiritually while your body is struggling.

Disconnection From Your Body

Ignoring symptoms, exhaustion, stress, or emotional pain because you were taught to “push through.”

Healing becomes difficult when your body is treated like the enemy.

The Body Keeps Telling the Truth

Many women begin their wellness journey when they finally stop silencing their bodies.

The fatigue. The inflammation. The anxiety. The emotional exhaustion.

Your body is not betraying you. Your body is communicating.

Learning to listen to your body again can feel unfamiliar after years of overriding your needs to meet spiritual expectations.

But wellness begins when you reconnect with yourself.

Reclaiming Wellness Without Shame

Religious deconstruction often opens the door to a more grounded, holistic approach to healing.

This may include:

  • Therapy and emotional support

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Nutrition and gut health

  • Yoga and mindful movement

  • Breathwork, chanting and meditation

  • Sound healing

  • Herbal medicine

  • Rest and boundaries

  • Holistic wellness practices

  • Medical support and advocacy

  • Community care and safe spaces

You do not have to earn rest. You do not have to suffer to prove your faith. You do not have to choose between spirituality and wellness.

Grieving the Version of Yourself That Tried Harder

There is grief that comes with deconstruction. Grief for the version of yourself that:

  • blamed herself for being sick

  • kept praying harder while silently suffering

  • ignored her body to appear “strong”

  • stayed in spaces that invalidated her pain

  • thought healing only looked one way

Allow yourself to grieve that version of you with compassion. She was surviving with the tools she had.

Creating a New Definition of Healing

Healing can become:

  • softer

  • slower

  • safer

  • integrative with holistic and allopathic medicine

  • more embodied

  • more honest

  • more aligned with your actual needs

At Asylo Health, we believe wellness should support the whole person:

Mind. Body. Spirit.

Not shame.

Not fear.
